Mother Earth: Landfill textile art

$2,000.00

The inspiration for this piece was a photo of a landfill overflowing with clothes, plastic bottles & other ephemeral items.  I captured the chaotic nature of its debris with my own waste materials; remnant yarns, handmade paper and handwoven swatch fragments.  The open sky with shimmering wisps offers hope for our environment.

Textile collage featuring upcycled handwoven alpaca, bamboo & silk fabrics and handmade paper from remnant warp yarns.

Dimensions:  24″W x 18″H

The inspiration for Mother Earth: Landfill textile art was a photo of a landfill overflowing with clothes, plastic bottles and other ephemeral items.  I wanted to capture the chaotic nature of the landfill debris.  So I upcycled my own waste materials of remnant yarns and swatch fragments.

The open sky with shimmering wisps offers hope for our environment if we only choose to make it so.  It also provides visual relief and balance from the density below.

The fashion industry is a well-documented menace to our environment in terms of air & water pollution.  But it also is a major contributor to landfills.  The scope of this problem is enormous.

For example, 13 Million tons of textiles are dumped into landfills every year.  This is the result of overproduction and the seasonal whims that consumers follow.  Because of this, these landfills are impacting climate and displacing indigenous people in countries like Chile, China and the United States.

We must make better choices as consumers.  We can start by choosing quality and stylish craftsmanship over cheap and disposable trendiness to improve and protect our environment.

The abstract nature of my Mother Earth: Landfill textile art offers many interpretations – what does it represent to you?
